The term “engine lathe” refers specifically to a typical bench lathe. These are generally small to medium-sized, horizontally mounted lathes with carriage, slide, and the other normal features consistent with lathes. Found in small machine shops and workshops worldwide, an engine lathe is merely a lathe with slide and power feed. Unlike their name, they’re not powered by an engine, but rather by a small motor and many have CNC capabilities.

“Swing over cross slide” is the maximum diameter of a workpiece that will clear the cross slide while “swing over bed” is the biggest workpiece diameter a particular lathe can handle.
